OUR
BRIEF HISTORY......
Rediscovering the Gran Sabana
We can start out by saying that lagransabana.com
was launched onto the internet in the middle of
1999. Obviously, the project began a couple of
months before this date. Lagransabana.com was
launched specifically in Santa Elena de Uairén,
capital of the Gran Sabana municipal district in
Bolívar state, Venezuela. In July of 1999,
David Domínguez, obtained the domain and
designed the first version of the website and
put it on-line in August of that year with
information and photographs of the Sabana that
he had been collecting bit by bit...
A lover of film and photography, David became
familiar with the savannah by chance and became
fascinated by the energy and stunning beauty of
the region. This resulted in his decision to
show it in detail by means of the world-wide
web, trying to create awareness of the
importance of protecting and conserving this and
all natural regions of the planet.
Iván Artal joins the project:
Iván Artal,
owner of the tourism agency,
Ruta Salvaje,
also lives and works in Santa Elena de Uairén,
and very happily joined the lagransabana.com
project, contributing many ideas and valuable
knowledge of this impressive Venezuelan region.
Ivan knows the region very well, offers tours to
visitors from all over the world, is a lover of
adventure, is always exploring new routes,
looking for the thrill and enjoying to the
maximum his love of the Gran Sabana. That is,
always being sure to respect this environment
and forming campaigns to pick up the trash left
behind by many litterbugs. Ex-champion of
motocross, he also plans and hosts events for
this sport in Santa Elena de Uairén.
Raúl Arias, Contributes his experience:
Raúl Arías works in Santa Elena as the president
and pilot of his business Raulhelicopteros.com,
undergoing many flights to all parts of the
region and to the tops of the magnificent tepuis.
Many years of experience have earned Raúl his
fame as a great pilot and a connoisseur of these
latitudes. Raúl gladly became part of
lagransabana.com and thanks to him have been
able to take great visual shots like the
incredible photographs that you can see on this
website.
Little by little a working group forms that
undergoes many trips throughout the Gran Sabana
in order to compile material and information of
all kinds; expeditions to the magnificent tepuis
to study everything in regards to the endemic
vegetation of these areas and their other
geological characteristics, which never fail to
impress us when we visit them. Frequent trips
throughout the rivers and different areas of the
region are also carried out.
In this way lagransabana.com is nurtured
vicariously through experiences lived and which
we plan on continuing to live, since
lagransabana.com grows from day to day; new
expeditions, new areas, new people, new stories,
and new experiences in the rivers and wild
savannahs. We do all this in order to
share it and take care of it.
But the team of lagransabana.com is more than
just David, Iván and Raúl. It consists of other
people who in one way or another have made it
possible for all of this to be constructed,
displayed, and brought to fruition; people,
who from this same savannah, live the
experiences shown here everyday and who are also
a very important part of the team.
WE SHOULD ALWAYS
REMEMBER:
WE SHOULD BE AWARE THAT THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS
MUST BE RESPECTED

Unite and
Preserve it!
We hope that you like this portal and its contents and
that it encourages you to visit, conserve and
protect these fragile ecosystems, in addition to
helping us continue on with this idea of promoting and
providing information about these beautiful areas and
illustrating the touristic splendours of Venezuela.
Remember that the La Gran Sabana is not only a
geographic region; it is an environment filled with
energy in which many people make important changes in
their manner of thinking. It is an area that invites us
to reflect and meditate. So,
when
you
come
to
the
savannah,
remember to give yourself time to think,
breathe, and live more
calmly.
